Glass Scratch Removal & Restoration

Scratched glass almost never needs replacing. That single fact is the reason this company exists, and it is the first thing most customers are surprised to hear — because the default advice from a glazier is a new unit, and a new unit is what they sell.

Glass scratch removal works because a scratch is not a hole. It is a channel displaced in the surface of the pane, usually only a few microns deep. Polishing removes a thin, even layer of glass across the affected area until the base of the scratch is reached and the surface is continuous again. The pane stays in its frame. There is no glazier, no scaffolding, no lead time on a bespoke unit, and no risk of damaging the surround during removal.

How the process actually works

We start with an assessment, normally from photographs taken in low-angle light — that is when surface damage shows most clearly. We are looking at depth, not length. A long scratch that is shallow is a straightforward job. A short scratch deep enough to catch a fingernail takes longer and occasionally cannot be saved at all.

On site, the surrounding surfaces are masked and protected. We work through a sequence of progressively finer abrasive and polishing compounds, keeping the surface wet and the temperature controlled throughout. Heat is the enemy: worked too hard or too fast, glass distorts, and distortion is permanent and far more visible than the original scratch. This is the reason DIY kits and general handymen so often make the problem worse.

The final stage restores optical clarity. Done correctly, the repaired area is indistinguishable from the rest of the pane, including at an angle and in direct sunlight. We do not consider a job finished until that is true.

What we can remove

• Scratches from builders, contractors and fit-out work — trowels, scaffold ties, tools and render splash
• Cleaning damage — abrasive pads, grit under a squeegee, and blade marks from scraping off stickers or paint
• Scratched-in graffiti and vandalism, including tags cut with blades, stones and keys
• Acid etching and marker-pen attacks on shopfronts
• Hard-water limescale bonded into the surface of shower screens and external glazing
• General wear on glass tables, balustrades, splashbacks and display cabinets

What we cannot fix — and will tell you straight away

We turn work away, and we would rather do that than take a deposit for something that will not work. Restoration cannot repair a chip or a crack: those are structural, and the pane needs replacing. It cannot clear condensation or misting between the panes of a double-glazed unit, because that is a failed seal and the damage is inside the sealed cavity, not on the surface we can reach.

It also cannot help where a scratch has gone deep enough to compromise the structural integrity of a toughened pane. Send us photographs and we will tell you which category you are in before anyone books a visit. An honest no costs you nothing; a wasted callout costs you a morning.

What it costs, and why it is worth it

Restoration is typically 20–30% of the cost of replacing the same pane, and the gap widens sharply as the glass gets larger or harder to reach. On a standard residential window the saving is meaningful. On a curtain-wall unit twelve floors up, or a bespoke structural balustrade, the saving is often an order of magnitude — because replacement means access equipment, permits, a manufacturing lead time and a road closure, and restoration means a technician with a working platform.

We quote fixed prices from photographs before attending, so there is no situation where a technician arrives and the price changes. If we get on site and find the damage is worse than the photographs showed, we tell you before starting, not after.

For homeowners the work is most often builder damage after an extension or loft conversion, cleaning scratches on large picture windows, and limescale etching on shower screens. For commercial clients it is shopfronts, office partitioning, gym and leisure glass, and post-construction snagging across whole developments.

On commercial sites we work to your hours rather than ours. Most retail and office work is done early morning, evening or weekend so trading and occupancy are unaffected. The process produces no dust and no fumes, so a space is usable immediately afterwards — there is no drying or curing period to plan around.
