Scratched-in graffiti is the one form of vandalism that cleaning genuinely cannot touch. No solvent, no pressure washer and no specialist product will remove it, because nothing has been added to the glass — glass has been taken away. The tag is a channel cut into the surface with a blade, a stone, a key or a ceramic shard.

This is why businesses are so often told the only option is a new pane. It is not. Polishing removes an even layer of glass across the affected area until the surface is continuous again, and the tag is gone.

Scratchitti, acid etching and marker attacks

Scratched tagging is the most common. It appears on street-level frontage, bus shelters, shopfronts and communal entrances, and it tends to attract more of the same — a tagged pane is a target, which is why speed of removal matters commercially as much as appearance.

Acid etching is less common but more aggressive. Etch pens and creams frost the glass permanently, leaving a white tag no cleaner will shift. Because the damage is shallow it responds very well to restoration, usually in a single visit.

Paint and marker attacks sit on the surface and are often removable by cleaning, but the attempt to clean them is frequently what causes the real damage — a blade or abrasive pad used on a coated or toughened pane leaves scratching worse than the original tag. If that has already happened, both problems are dealt with in the same visit.

Why speed matters

A tagged frontage affects trade every day it stays up. It reads as neglect, it signals that the location is not monitored, and in retail and hospitality it measurably affects footfall. It also attracts repeat tagging: the longer a tag stays visible, the more likely the pane is hit again.

We prioritise vandalism callouts for that reason. Send photographs and we will confirm availability quickly — and for urgent cases where a pane has been broken rather than scratched, see our emergency glass repair and boarding service.

The commercial case against replacement

Replacing a shopfront pane means a glazier, a bespoke order for anything non-standard, a lead time measured in days or weeks, boarding in the meantime, and often a road or pavement closure for installation. The unit itself is frequently the smallest line on the invoice.

Restoration means one technician, one visit, and typically 20–30% of the cost. The unit is not removed, the shopfront is not boarded, and in most cases the business does not close for a single hour because we work outside trading times.

Insurance claims

Vandalism damage is often covered by commercial insurance. We provide itemised quotations and before-and-after photographic documentation suitable for submitting a claim, which is normally exactly what an insurer asks for.

It is worth noting that insurers increasingly prefer restoration over replacement where it is viable, because the claim value is far lower. A restoration quote can be the difference between a claim that is worth making and an excess that swallows it.

What cannot be saved

If a tag has been cut deep enough to compromise the structural integrity of a toughened pane, restoration is not appropriate and we will say so. The same applies where vandalism has chipped or cracked the glass rather than scratched it — those are structural failures and the pane needs replacing.

We assess depth from photographs before quoting. If the answer is replacement, you will hear that from us before you have paid anything.

Across London

We remove scratched graffiti from glass across Greater London, with the heaviest concentration on the busy retail and hospitality corridors — Upper Street and Angel in Islington, Northcote Road and the Clapham Junction area, and the high streets across Wandsworth and Wood Green. Residential blocks and communal entrances are covered equally.
